Stem-and-Leaf Plot

How to draw a stem-and-leaf plot from the given data: example and its solution.

Example

The following data show test scores for 20 students: 81, 56, 74, 52, 78, 81, 77, 91, 85, 60, 75, 69, 97, 84, 70, 67, 80, 74, 74, 88. Organize the data in a frequency table. Use the digits from 5 to 9 as the stem.

Make a t shape form.
Name the upper row as 'Stem' and 'Leaf'.

Write the 'Stem' digits under the 'Stem' column:
9, 8, 7, 6, and 5.

Find the data that whose tens is 9:
91, 97. (purple)
Write 1 and 7 in the 'Leaf' column.

Next, find the data that whose tens is 8:
81, 81, 85, 84, 80, 88 (blue)
Write 1, 1, 5, 4, 0, and 8 in the 'Leaf' column.

By the same way, fill in the leaves.

To aviod making mistakes,
mark the numbers in the data while finding & writing.

To arrange the leaves, make the plot again.

Fill the leaves in ascending order.
For example, 1, 1, 5, 4, 0, 8 → 0, 1, 1, 4, 5, 8.

Draw the key under the second plot.
