Solving Rational Equations

Solving Rational Equations

How to solve rational equations: example and its solution.

Example

Solve the given expression. 3/x + x/(x - 1) = 1/(x(x - 1))

Write the excluded values.
x ≠ 0, 1.

Multiply the LCD on each fraction: x(x - 1)

It's OK to multiply the LCD on both sides
because x(x - 1) ≠ 0.

Solve the equation.

Then x = -4, 1.

But x ≠ 1.
(Line 2)

So the answer is x = 4.
