Prime Factorization

Prime Factorization

How to find the prime factorization of a number: example and its solution.

Example 1

Find the prime factorization of 60.

Split 60 into a pair of its factors: 6 and 10.

Split 6 into a pair of its factors: 2 and 3.
Split 10 into a pair of its factors: 2 and 5.

Split the numbers like this
until there are only prime numbers.

2, 3, and 5 are all prime factors.
So stop splitting the factors.

So 60 = 22⋅3⋅5.
