Parallel Lines

Parallel Lines

How to solve parallel lines problems (linear equations): definition, example, and its solution.

Definition

Parallel lines are lines that have the same slope. The red symbols shows that these two lines are parallel lines.

Parallel lines are lines
that have the same slope.

The red symbols are parallel lines symbols.

Example

Write an equation of the line that is parallel to y = 3x + 4 and passes through (1, -2).

The line is parallel to y = 3x + 4.
So the slope of the line is 3.

And the line passes through (1, -2).

So write the linear equation
in point-slope form:
y - (-2) = 3(x - 1).

Change this form into slope-intercept form.

You can see that
the given line (y = 3x + 4)
and the answer (y = 3x - 5)
are parallel.
