Foil Method

Foil Method

How to use the foil method to solve polynomial problems: formula, examples and their solutions.

Formula

(a + b)(c + d) = ac [F] + ad [O] + bc [I] + bd [L]

FOIL method is a way
to solve the product of two binomials.

Multiply the First two terms.
Multiply the Outer terms.
Multiply the Inner terms.
Multiply the Last two terms.

Example 1

Simplify the given expression. (x + 2)(x - 3)

F: xx = x2
O: x⋅(-3) = -3x
I: +2⋅x = +2x
L: +2⋅(-3) = -62

Adding and subtracting polynomials

Example 2

Simplify the given expression. (a - 5b)(2a + b)

F: a⋅2a = 2a2
O: a⋅(+b) = +ab
I: -5b⋅(2a) = -10ab
L: -5b⋅(+b) = -5b2
