# Factoring: Using the Distributive Property

How to factor a polynomial by using the distributive property: examples and their solutions.

## Example 1

Write the GCF of *x*^{3} and +3*x*^{2}: *x*^{2}.

Inside (, write *x*^{3} ÷ *x*^{2}: *x*.

Write +3*x*^{2} ÷ *x*^{2}: +3.

This solution is the opposite of

multiplying a polynomial by a monomial.

## Example 2

Write the GCF of *a*^{2}, -2*ab*, and +4*a*: *a*.

Inside (, write *a*^{2} ÷ *a*: *a*.

Write -2*ab* ÷ *a*: -2*b*.

Write +4*a* ÷ *a*: +4.
