Dividing Scientific Notation

How to solve dividing numbers in scientific notation problems: examples and their solutions.

Example 1

Evaluate. (9.02 * 10^7) / (3.75 * 10^4)

Divide the blue parts and the red parts separately.

Quotient of powers (red)

9.02 ÷ 3.75 is 2.40533... .

But both 9.02 and 3.75 has 3 significant digits.

So round 2.40533... to 3 significant digits: 2.41.

Rounding:
0-4 → round down
5-9 → round up

Example 2

Evaluate. (1.57 * 10^8) / (8.06 * 10^5)

Divide the blue parts and the red parts separately.

Quotient of powers (red)

1.57 ÷ 8.06 is 0.17425... .

So, by rounding, it'll be 0.174.

But 0.174 is not in this interval:
1 ≤ 0.17 < 10.

So change 0.174 to 1.74 × 10-1.

And multiply this 10-1 and 103.

So the answer is 1.74 × 102.
