Average (Mean)

Average (Mean)

How to find the average (mean) of the given data: formula, examples, and their solutions.

Formula

(Average) = (Sum of the data)/(Number of the data)

The average (mean) is one of the ways
to represent the whole data.

(average, mean) = (Sum)/(Number)

Other ways: Median, Mode

Example 1

Find the average for the data below. (Round the answer to the nearest tenth if necessary.) 1, 3, 1, 2, 2, 4, 2

(sum) = 15
(number) = 7

(average, mean) = 15/7

Example 2

The following table shows quiz scores of 20 students: [Scores(Frequency)] 0(1), 1(1), 2(4), 3(7), 4(5), 5(2) Find the mean of the data.

Make a '(Scores)⋅(Frequency)' column
next to the 'Frequency' column.

Write the (scores)⋅(frequency) for each row.
This means adding up the same scores.
(Row 3: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 2⋅4 = 8)

At the bottom,
write the sum of the (scores)⋅(frequency): 60.

This is the 'sum' of the data.

(sum) = 60
(number) = 20

(average, mean) = 60/20
