Area of a Parallelogram

Area of a Parallelogram

How to find the area of a parallelogram: formula, proof, examples, and their solutions.

Formula

A = bh. A: area of a parallelogram, b: base, h: height

A = bh

A: area of a parallelogram
b: base
h: height

Proof

Area of a Parallelogram: Proof of the Formula

By a diagonal,
a parallelogram is divided into two triangles.

And the area of each triangle is (1/2)bh.

So the area of the parallelogram is
2 × (1/2)bh = bh.

Example 1

Find the area of the given parallelogram. Base: 9, Height: 5.

b = 9, h = 5

A = 9⋅5

Example 2

Find the area of the given parallelogram. Base: 11, Height: 8.

b = 11, h = 8

A = 11⋅8
