# Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

How to add and subtract the terms in a polynomial: examples and their solutions.

## Example 1

Only like terms

(terms that have the same variables & exponents)

can be added or subtracted.

7*x*^{2} and +2*x*^{2} are like terms.

So 7*x*^{2} + 2*x*^{2} = (7 + 2)*x*^{2}.

-3*x* and +8*x* are like terms.

So -3*x* + 8*x* = (-3 + 8)*x*.

## Example 2

3*a*^{2} and -*a*^{2} are like terms. (blue)

So 3*a*^{2} - *a*^{2} = (3 - 1)*a*^{2}.

+*ab*^{2} and +9*ab*^{2} are like terms. (green)

So *ab*^{2} + 9*ab*^{2} = (1 + 9)*ab*^{2}.

+2*ab* and -6*ab* are like terms. (red)

So +2*ab* - 6*ab* = (2 - 6)*ab*.
